Mini-Course: How to Speak Pashto - Lesson 4 - Present Tense First Person

When you are starting your journey on how to learn Pashto, the very first thing you need to master is the "identity" ending. In the KPK dialect , especially the way we speak in Kohat , the verb usually comes at the very end of the sentence. This is where the rules of Yam and Yu come into play. The word Yam (یم) is used exclusively for yourself. Whenever you start a sentence with " Za " (meaning I), you must finish it with "Yam." It functions like the word "am" in English. For instance, if you want to tell someone you are fine, you say "Za kha yam." Whether you are hungry, tired, or happy, as long as you are talking about yourself, "Yam" is your anchor. It is a simple pattern that builds immediate confidence in your speaking ability. On the other hand, we have Yu (یو). This is the plural form used when you are talking as a group. In our culture, the "we" is often more important than the "I...

Corporate Wisdom: The Tale of the Mouse and the Camel

Rumi’s Masnavi is filled with stories that teach us valuable life lessons, many of which we can apply to our professional lives. One such tale is about a mouse that boasts about holding the reins of a camel, unaware of the vast difference in their capabilities. Through this story, we learn about humility, self-awareness, and the dangers of arrogance.

mouse and camel

The Story: The Mouse and the Camel

One day, a mouse stumbled upon the reins of a camel. Excited by the discovery, the mouse began boasting about how powerful he was to be able to hold the reins of such a large and mighty creature. The camel, being calm and wise, noticed the mouse’s arrogance but chose not to respond. He knew that actions speak louder than words and decided to let the mouse learn a lesson on his own.

The mouse, full of pride, confidently led the camel along a path. He felt grand, thinking he was in control of this enormous animal. After some time, they approached a wide, deep stream. The mouse, realizing the water was far too deep for him to cross, stopped in his tracks. The camel noticed the mouse’s hesitation and asked, “Why have you stopped? Lead the way.”

The mouse replied, “I can’t go forward. The stream is too deep for me. The water will only reach your knee, but for me, it will drown me.”

The camel, understanding the mouse’s predicament, simply smiled. The mouse, who had earlier boasted about controlling the camel, now understood that there were limits to his abilities. He learned that it is foolish to compare himself to someone much larger and stronger and that arrogance often leads to humiliation.

 Lessons for the Professional World

1. Humility is the Foundation of Growth

The mouse’s boasting highlights a common problem in both personal and professional settings: arrogance. We sometimes overestimate our abilities or think that a small success makes us superior to others. In the professional world, humility is key. A humble attitude allows us to learn from those with more experience and wisdom. Instead of boasting about small achievements, it’s important to recognize our limits and learn from others. Just like the mouse had to rely on the camel to cross the stream, we often need guidance and support from our colleagues or mentors.

2. Know Your Strengths, but Recognize Your Limitations

In a workplace, it’s essential to be aware of our strengths and skills, but it's just as important to recognize where we fall short. The mouse in the story thought he could control the camel, but when faced with the stream, he realized he lacked the ability to proceed. In the professional world, self-awareness is crucial. If we overestimate our abilities, we risk failing at critical moments. It's far better to acknowledge our limitations and seek help or advice when needed rather than pretend we can handle everything on our own.

3. Leadership Requires Wisdom, Not Just Control

The mouse thought that by holding the reins, he was in control of the camel. But true leadership isn't about having power over others—it’s about guiding them with wisdom. In corporate or team environments, a good leader is someone who knows how to handle situations with maturity and insight. Like the camel, who remained calm and allowed the mouse to learn from experience, effective leaders give others space to grow while offering support when necessary.

4. Don’t Let Ego Distract You from the Bigger Picture

The mouse’s focus was entirely on how important he felt while holding the reins, rather than on the task at hand. In a professional setting, ego can be a major distraction. When we are too concerned with appearances or showing off our skills, we lose sight of the actual work that needs to be done. The mouse learned this when he couldn’t cross the stream on his own. In the workplace, it's important to stay focused on the end goal rather than letting our ego dictate our actions. Collaboration and teamwork often produce better results than trying to do everything alone.

5. Arrogance Often Leads to Embarrassment

Finally, the story reminds us that arrogance is often followed by embarrassment. The mouse was proud and boastful at the beginning, but when he encountered the stream, he was forced to admit his weakness. In professional life, those who are too proud or overconfident are often humbled by challenges they aren’t prepared for. A modest attitude, on the other hand, allows us to navigate difficulties with grace and seek help when necessary, avoiding unnecessary embarrassment.

Rumi’s tale of the mouse and the camel offers timeless wisdom that is just as relevant in today’s professional world as it was centuries ago. By practicing humility, recognizing our limitations, and focusing on teamwork rather than ego, we can grow both personally and professionally. The next time you find yourself holding the "reins" in your workplace, remember that true strength lies in self-awareness and collaboration, not in empty boasting.
