I was born and raised in Kohat, a historic town in KPK Province, Pakistan. While Pashto is the majority language here, coexisting with Hindko and Urdu, I personally struggled to master it. I spent years navigating conversations, feeling disconnected from local population. I made a solemn promise: if I ever achieved fluency, I would use that knowledge to serve the language. That promise led me here.

This mini-course on how to speak Pashto is my attempt to honor that commitment and make this beautiful, resilient language accessible. Join me to explore Pashto and preserve its vital role in global culture!

Pashto, also known as Pakhto or Afghani, is a profound Eastern Iranian language spoken by an estimated 60 million people worldwide, primarily the Pashtun people (Pakhtuns) across Afghanistan and Pakistan. It holds official status in Afghanistan and is a major regional language in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KPK) of Pakistan.

Pashto is written in the Arabic script modified to include additional letters. The language is rooted in two main dialects: the Northern/Peshawari dialect (hard 'sh' sound) and the Southern/Kandahari dialect (soft 'kh' sound). Pashto's literary tradition is rich, dating back centuries, and it is a cornerstone of the ancient Pashtun code of honor, Pashtunwali.
